Vaqta is inactivated hepatitis A vaccine for prevention of HAV infection. HAV is a fecal-oral transmitted virus causing acute hepatitis — usually self-limited but can be severe in older adults or those with chronic liver disease. Routine childhood vaccination recommended; adult vaccination for travelers to endemic regions, MSM, people who use drugs, occupational exposure, chronic liver disease, others.
How Vaqta Works:
HAV is a non-enveloped RNA virus transmitted by fecal-oral route — typically from contaminated food/water in regions with poor sanitation, or person-to-person spread. Causes acute hepatitis ranging from asymptomatic to severe; rare cases of acute liver failure especially in older adults or those with underlying liver disease.
Vaqta contains inactivated hepatitis A virus. Vaccination produces neutralizing antibodies that protect against HAV infection. Two doses 6–18 months apart provide long-term protection (probably lifelong in most recipients).
Form and use:
Vaqta given as IM injection. Pediatric formulation (25 U/0.5 mL) for ages 12 months–18 years; adult formulation (50 U/1 mL) for ≥19 years. Second dose 6–18 months after first.
Generic availability:
No ‘generic’ for vaccines. Alternative: Havrix (same indication, similar efficacy). Combined Twinrix (HAV + HBV) for patients who need both. Childhood vaccinations covered under Vaccines for Children (VFC) program for eligible children (Medicaid-enrolled, uninsured, AI/AN, underinsured).
Warnings:
Common reactions: local injection site soreness, headache, fever. Severe reactions rare. Severe allergic reactions to prior dose or vaccine components contraindicate further doses. Pregnancy: generally given if at risk; safety data accumulating.
$80–$150/dose. Most insurance covers as ACA preventive service. VFC program for eligible children. Health departments often have adult vaccines at low cost.
Both FDA-approved hepatitis A vaccines, similar efficacy. Interchangeable for second dose if needed. Use whichever your provider has.
Two doses likely provide lifelong protection in most. No booster typically needed. Serologic testing for antibodies available but not routinely recommended.
Routine for all children at age 1. Adults with risk factors: travel to endemic regions, MSM, people who use drugs, occupational exposure (lab workers, food handlers in some jurisdictions), chronic liver disease, clotting factor disorders, household/sexual contact of HAV-infected person. Outbreak settings as recommended.
Most insurance plans cover ACA-listed preventive vaccines with no cost-share. Hepatitis A is on the ACA preventive list.
Vaccines for Children program provides free vaccines for eligible children through enrolled providers — eligibility includes Medicaid, uninsured, underinsured, AI/AN.
