Discount Coupons vs. Patient Assistance Programs

Many patients try discount cards first. Here’s why the Patient Assistance Program through AffordMyPrescriptions is the better long-term solution for LMX:

Limitations of Coupons

  • Prices fluctuate — savings aren’t guaranteed month-to-month
  • Copay accumulators may prevent savings from counting toward deductible
  • Coupon cards expire and require constant renewal
  • Still $700–$1,000 per month even with the best discount

  • Can’t be used with Medicare, Medicaid, or government insurance

Advantages of PAP Through Us

  • Fixed $69.95/month — never changes regardless of retail price
  • No expiration — continuous access as long as you qualify
  • Medication supplied directly through the assistance program
  • We manage all paperwork, refills, and annual renewals
  • If denied, we explore alternative savings on your behalf

DO YOU QUALIFY?

Eligibility is generally determined by annual household income and insurance status. Most programs follow guidelines that include limits of up to $40,000 for individuals, $60,000 for couples, and $100,000 for larger families. Because requirements vary by program and household, we encourage you to contact AffordMyPrescriptions directly so we can review your specific situation and determine if you qualify for Neupro assistance.

Not sure if you qualify?  Our pre-qualification check is completely free. If we can’t help, you won’t be charged.

Understanding Neupro :

Neupro is a transdermal patch delivering rotigotine, a non-ergot dopamine agonist. Continuous 24-hour delivery provides stable drug levels — potentially reducing motor fluctuations and dyskinesias seen with oral pulsatile dosing in Parkinson’s. The patch also bypasses GI absorption issues that affect some Parkinson’s patients with gastroparesis or swallowing difficulty.

How Neupro Works:

Parkinson’s disease involves degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra — reducing dopamine signaling to the striatum. Symptomatic therapy aims to restore dopaminergic activity.

Rotigotine is a non-ergot dopamine receptor agonist (preferentially D3, D2). Transdermal delivery provides continuous stimulation — potentially reducing motor fluctuations seen with pulsatile oral dopamine agonists. The patch route also avoids first-pass metabolism and GI issues. For RLS, dopamine agonists reduce uncomfortable leg sensations and the urge to move.

Form and use:

Neupro patch applied once daily to dry intact skin. Different dose strengths for Parkinson’s (2–8 mg/24 hour) and RLS (1–3 mg/24 hour). Rotate sites daily. Avoid heat exposure (heating pad, sauna). Discard properly — used patches still contain active drug.

Generic availability:

There is no generic Neupro. Other non-ergot dopamine agonists: pramipexole IR/ER (Mirapex, generic — very cheap), ropinirole IR/ER (Requip, generic — very cheap). For PD: levodopa/carbidopa (Sinemet, generic) is gold-standard symptomatic therapy; combinations with COMT inhibitors (entacapone — generic) or MAO-B inhibitors (rasagiline — generic; selegiline — generic).

Warnings:

Neupro carries warnings for impulse control disorders (compulsive gambling, hypersexuality, binge eating, compulsive shopping — class effect of dopamine agonists; ask patients periodically), sudden onset of sleep (sleep attacks — avoid driving until stable), orthostatic hypotension, syncope, hallucinations (especially in elderly), dyskinesias (in advanced PD), withdrawal syndrome with abrupt discontinuation (taper), weight gain/fluid retention, melanoma (rare association with PD and dopamine therapy), and dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Cost?

Brand Neupro $700–$1,000/month. Generic oral pramipexole $10/month, generic ropinirole $10/month. Generic oral dopamine agonist usually most affordable.

Continuous 24-hour delivery may reduce motor fluctuations in advanced PD. Patch also useful for patients with gastroparesis, dysphagia, or who miss multiple oral doses. Most patients do well on oral dopamine agonists at much lower cost.

Often yes. Both are very cheap as generics and effective for early/moderate PD and RLS. Most insurance plans prefer trial of generic oral first. Patch reserved for patients who can’t tolerate oral or have specific indications.

ALL dopamine agonists (patch and oral) can cause impulse control disorders — pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping/eating. Patients and families should be educated and asked about these symptoms at every visit.

Falling asleep without warning while driving has been reported. Avoid driving until you know how you respond to dopamine agonists. Tell prescriber about excessive daytime sleepiness.

Local site reactions common. Rotate sites daily. Don’t apply heat to the patch (dramatically increases absorption — overdose risk).

Generic oral dopamine agonists (pramipexole, ropinirole) are dramatically cheaper. Parkinson’s Foundation may help.
