Key Takeaways:

What Is Tafinlar Prescription Assistance Program?

The Tafinlar Prescription Assistance Program is a manufacturer-sponsored initiative that provides Tafinlar at little or no medication cost to qualifying patients based on income and insurance status. The program is designed for BRAF-mutated cancer patients who are uninsured or underinsured, as well as Medicare Part D beneficiaries.

Navigating the program on your own means dealing with eligibility verification, oncology coordination, BRAF mutation testing documentation, prior-authorization documentation, specialty pharmacy logistics, and renewal deadlines.

AffordMyPrescriptions eliminates that burden. For a flat $69.95 per month, our Patient Advocates handle every step of your enrollment, from initial application through ongoing refill coordination and re-certification.

Discount Coupons vs. Patient Assistance Programs

Many patients try discount cards first. Here’s why the Patient Assistance Program through AffordMyPrescriptions is the better long-term solution for Tafinlar:

Limitations of Coupons

  • Prices fluctuate — savings aren’t guaranteed month-to-month
  • Copay accumulators may prevent savings from counting toward deductible
  • Coupon cards expire and require constant renewal
  • Still $13,000–$15,500 per month even with the best discount

  • Can’t be used with Medicare, Medicaid, or government insurance

Advantages of PAP Through Us

  • Fixed $69.95/month — never changes regardless of retail price
  • No expiration — continuous access as long as you qualify
  • Medication supplied directly through the assistance program
  • We manage all paperwork, refills, and annual renewals
  • If denied, we explore alternative savings on your behalf

DO YOU QUALIFY?

Eligibility is generally determined by annual household income and insurance status. Most programs follow guidelines that include limits of up to $40,000 for individuals, $60,000 for couples, and $100,000 for larger families. Because requirements vary by program and household, we encourage you to contact AffordMyPrescriptions directly so we can review your specific situation and determine if you qualify for Tafinlar assistance.

Not sure if you qualify?  Our pre-qualification check is completely free. If we can’t help, you won’t be charged.

Understanding Tafinlar :

Tafinlar (dabrafenib) is a twice-daily oral selective inhibitor of mutated BRAF kinase used to treat cancers driven by activating BRAF V600 mutations. It is typically combined with the MEK inhibitor trametinib (Mekinist) to delay resistance and improve outcomes.

How Tafinlar Works:

Certain cancers, including half of all melanomas, carry a mutated BRAF gene that constantly activates the MAPK signaling pathway to drive uncontrolled cell growth. Dabrafenib selectively blocks this mutated BRAF kinase activity to shut down the pathway, resulting in a dramatic initial tumor response. However, because tumors quickly develop resistance within months, dabrafenib is combined with the downstream MEK inhibitor trametinib. This combination successfully delays resistance and improves overall survival, making it the standard treatment for BRAF-mutated cancers.

Form and use:

Tafinlar is an oral medication taken twice daily on an empty stomach, meaning at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. The standard dosage is 150 mg twice a day, which is typically achieved by taking two 75 mg capsules per dose. It is usually prescribed in combination with Mekinist (trametinib), which is taken at a dose of 2 mg once daily. Patients generally continue this combination treatment until their disease progresses or the side effects become unacceptable.

Generic availability:

As of 2026, there is no generic version of Tafinlar available in the United States. Other existing BRAF inhibitors include encorafenib and vemurafenib, with combinations like dabrafenib plus trametinib or encorafenib plus binimetinib serving as standard options. For specific conditions like BRAF V600E colorectal cancer, a regimen of encorafenib combined with cetuximab is the approved choice. Depending on the patient’s case, immunotherapy options like Keytruda or Opdivo also serve as first-line alternatives for melanoma.

Warnings:

Tafinlar carries risks for developing new primary cancers, such as skin carcinomas, and it must never be used in BRAF wild-type tumors because it can actually stimulate cancer growth. Serious febrile reactions with fevers reaching 38.5°C or higher are very common, particularly when the drug is used in combination therapy. Additionally, it requires monitoring for severe cardiomyopathy, uveitis, severe skin reactions, and hyperglycemia. Other potential warnings include hemorrhage, embryo-fetal toxicity, and hemolytic anemia in patients who are G6PD-deficient.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How Much Does Tafinlar Cost Without Insurance?

Tafinlar costs approximately $13,000–$15,500 per 30-day supply. When combined with Mekinist (trametinib), monthly costs commonly exceed $25,000–$30,000+. Through AffordMyPrescriptions, qualifying patients receive Tafinlar at no medication cost — our $69.95 monthly fee covers full advocacy and program management.

Tafinlar is only effective in cancers with activating BRAF V600 mutations (V600E being most common, V600K also approved in some indications). BRAF mutation testing on tumor tissue (or sometimes blood) is required before starting. In BRAF wild-type tumors, dabrafenib actually STIMULATES cancer growth — it must not be used in BRAF wild-type.

BRAF monotherapy initially produces strong responses, but resistance develops within months in most patients because cancer cells reactivate the MAPK pathway downstream of BRAF. Adding the MEK inhibitor trametinib (Mekinist) — which blocks the next kinase in the pathway — delays resistance and improves survival compared with dabrafenib alone. The combination also reduces some side effects (paradoxical skin cancers from BRAF monotherapy are less common with combination therapy).

Pyrexia (fever ≥38.5°C / 101.3°F) occurs in about 50–60% of patients on combination Tafinlar + Mekinist. It often occurs in cycles. Management includes dose interruption or reduction, antipyretics (acetaminophen, NSAIDs), and sometimes corticosteroids. Tell your oncologist about any fever — they have a specific protocol for managing it. Don’t stop the medications on your own.

BRAF inhibitors can promote development of new skin cancers (cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, keratoacanthomas, and rarely new melanomas) through paradoxical activation of MAPK signaling in BRAF-wild-type skin cells. Combination with a MEK inhibitor reduces but doesn’t eliminate this risk. Dermatology evaluation at baseline and every 2 months during therapy and for 6 months after stopping is recommended.

Yes. Medicare Part D beneficiaries can typically qualify, especially if you face specialty-tier copays. The manufacturer’s commercial copay savings program is reserved for commercially insured patients only — but the underlying PAP supports Medicare patients who meet income criteria.

If denied, we explore alternatives — switching to a different BRAF + MEK combination with its own PAP (encorafenib + binimetinib for melanoma), checkpoint immunotherapy (Keytruda, Opdivo) for melanoma, the manufacturer’s copay program for commercially insured patients, or independent foundations such as the Melanoma Research Alliance, LUNGevity Foundation, PAN Foundation, or HealthWell Foundation. If we cannot find a path, you won’t be charged our service fee.
