How Relpax Works:
Migraine involves activation of the trigeminovascular system, releasing CGRP and other neuropeptides that cause cranial vasodilation and neurogenic inflammation. Triptans constrict cranial vessels (5-HT1B), inhibit neuropeptide release from trigeminal neurons (5-HT1D), and reduce central pain transmission.
Eletriptan binds 5-HT1B/1D receptors with high affinity, producing rapid relief of migraine pain, photophobia, phonophobia, and nausea — typically within 30 minutes to 2 hours. Effectiveness highest when taken at first sign of migraine.
Form and use:
Relpax 20 or 40 mg tablet at onset of migraine. May repeat after 2 hours if needed; max 80 mg/24h. Not for hemiplegic/basilar migraine, CAD, stroke history, peripheral vascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension. Avoid concomitant strong CYP3A4 inhibitors.
