Priftin (rifapentine) is a rifamycin antitubercular antibiotic with longer half-life than rifampin — allowing once-weekly dosing in latent TB treatment (the 3HP regimen) and twice-weekly intermittent dosing in continuation phase of active TB.
How ProctoFoam HC Works:
Anorectal inflammation from hemorrhoids, fissures, proctitis causes pain, itching, swelling. Topical anesthetic + corticosteroid provides symptomatic relief while underlying condition heals.
Pramoxine blocks nerve conduction (local anesthetic) — relieves pain and itching. Hydrocortisone reduces inflammation through standard corticosteroid mechanisms. The foam formulation coats mucosa for sustained effect.
Form and use:
ProctoFoam HC: 1 applicator 2–3 times daily for 2–3 weeks. Best after bowel movement; retain briefly. Don’t use beyond a few weeks without medical guidance.
Generic availability:
Generic pramoxine/hydrocortisone rectal foam available. OTC products with pramoxine + lower-dose hydrocortisone (0.5%) widely available (Preparation H Pain Relief, Anusol-HC, others) — much cheaper but lower potency. Generic hydrocortisone foam alone (without anesthetic) cheaper option.
Warnings:
Topical steroid effects with prolonged use: skin atrophy, HPA suppression, masking infection. Local anesthetic: hypersensitivity, methemoglobinemia (rare). Don’t use long-term. Avoid in untreated infections.
Brand $400–$700/canister. Generic pramoxine/HC $60–$100. OTC similar products $10–$20.
Yes, FDA-approved bioequivalent.
Yes — many OTC hemorrhoid products contain pramoxine + lower-dose hydrocortisone (typically 0.5% vs ProctoFoam HC’s 1% Rx strength). For mild-moderate symptoms, OTC often adequate at much lower cost.
Short-term only (2–3 weeks). Prolonged topical steroid use causes skin atrophy and other steroid effects. If symptoms persist, see GI or colorectal specialist for evaluation.
ProctoFoam HC provides symptomatic relief. Underlying hemorrhoid disease may need other treatments (fiber/water for prevention, sitz baths, rubber band ligation, surgery for severe cases). Topical foam doesn’t ‘cure’ hemorrhoids.
Anorectal bleeding should be evaluated by physician — rule out other causes (fissure, IBD, colorectal cancer, etc.). Don’t assume bleeding is just hemorrhoids without evaluation.
