Novolin is human insulin (regular, NPH, premixed 70/30). Older insulin formulations — predates modern analogs (lispro, aspart, glulisine, glargine, detemir, degludec). More variable absorption, less physiologic onset/peak patterns than analogs — but dramatically cheaper.
How Novolin Works:
Regular human insulin (Novolin R): onset 30 min, peak 2–3 hours, duration 6–8 hours. Used for mealtime coverage (take 30 min before meal). NPH (Novolin N): intermediate-acting, onset 1–2 hours, peak 4–6 hours, duration 10–16 hours. 70/30 premixed: 70% NPH + 30% regular.
Less convenient timing than rapid-acting analogs (need 30 min pre-meal vs 15 min) and basal analogs (NPH has prominent peak with more hypoglycemia risk vs flat glargine/detemir/degludec). But dramatically cheaper — viable affordable option for many patients.
Form and use:
Novolin SC injection. Regular before meals; NPH BID or BID with regular; 70/30 BID typically.
Generic availability:
Novolin is brand human insulin. Walmart sells Novolin under ‘ReliOn’ brand at $25/vial — same product, low-cost branding. Humulin is Lilly’s human insulin (similar products). Medicare $35 cap applies.
Warnings:
Hypoglycemia (more common with NPH peaks vs basal analogs), hypokalemia, weight gain, lipodystrophy at injection sites, fluid retention with TZDs.
$25–$100/vial. Walmart ReliOn $25/vial — among cheapest insulins. Medicare $35/month cap
Human insulin: cheaper, less convenient timing, more variable absorption, more hypoglycemia (NPH peaks). Analogs (lispro/aspart/glulisine/glargine/degludec): more expensive (until generics), faster/more physiologic action, less hypoglycemia, more flexible timing. For patients who can’t afford analogs, human insulin is acceptable alternative.
Walmart’s house brand of Novolin — same active product, $25/vial. Available without prescription in some states for human insulin (regular/NPH/70-30). Lifesaving low-cost option.
Regular (R): 30 min before meal (vs 15 min for rapid analogs). NPH: at scheduled times BID. 70/30: BID before breakfast and dinner.
Part D covers insulin at $35/month max per product since 2023.
Already among cheapest insulins. Walmart ReliOn $25. Medicare $35 cap.
